Hey guys I found a cool video that might help with getting into the mindset of what to think about when character designing. It shows a great number of tips that I think can help understand a little more of what it takes to be a character designer. Even if the designs are cartoony, the thought process can still carry over towards more realistic and live action designs.
It helps reiterate the things we learned from the beginning of the class, that a character design can be broken down into two aspects, the physical (gender, occupation, age) and the psychological (motivation, backstory, character arc) and how we go about mixing the two.
Sometime even what we perceive to be a weak design can have a lot of potential if the expression and gestures can tell us the essence of the character in the most appealing way, "attitude is everything".
Hope it helped! :D
